Portrait artist Alice Neel was born #onthisday in 1900! 🎂

Despite having a disastrous personal life, Alice Neel was a feisty, audacious artist whose unidealized portraits fearlessly captured the essence of her subjects. Like the woman, her work was often outrageous and quirky. For over 50 years she painted everyone around her including Communist Radicals and eccentrics in New York’s Greenwich Village, neighborhood families in Spanish Harlem and, later in life, art world celebrities.

She often said art was her salvation. After 30 years of painting in obscurity and suffering heartbreak after heartbreak (including the loss of her children, and having 300 of her paintings destroyed by an ex), she finally hit it big in the 1960’s when she was in her 60’s. The art world had caught up with her. She became a feminist icon and a celebrity in the art world, even making two appearances on the Johnny Carson Show.

That teeny-tiny little scarlet buoy bobbing across the waters of Utrecht harbor was the gasoline on top of the fire of the artistic feud of a century--the rivalry between John Constable and J.M.W. Turner.

This bitter feud had been in the boiling pot for years, with Constable largely being envious of Turner's (undeserved, in his opinion) artistic and commercial success, and Turner being his usual bumptious, occasionally arrogant self toward Constable.

On Varnishing Day at the 1832 summer exhibition, the artists were working on the finishing touches of their paintings. Constable was adding increasing amounts of color to "The Opening of Waterloo Bridge," a large work that he had labored over for fifteen years, in order to make it look more vibrant next to this largely colorless seascape by Turner. Enter Turner. After staring at Constable's painting, Turner left the room, only to return with fresh paint to apply a glob of red on his own canvas, making this buoy. Turner’s version of a mic drop! Suddenly, Constable's painting looked garish in comparison, and Turner's looked fresh. Constable repudiated this act, saying, “He has been here and fired a gun.” It's said Constable never quite recovered.

"Helvoetsluys; the City of Utrecht, 64, Going to Sea" by J.M.W. Turner is NEW at Sartle.com! Check out our bio to learn more about the depths of Constable and Turner's pettiness.

"In the Conservatory" by Manet was rescued by the Monuments Men from the salt mines of Merkers in 1945, where it had been hidden along with a stash of other works of art, some stolen, and some evacuated from German national museums. While often erroneously understood as a Nazi-looted painting, "In the Conservatory" had been owned by the Alte National Galerie in Berlin since 1896, the first painting by Manet to ever enter a museum. American soldiers can be seen in a photograph from the U.S. national archives standing next to the newly recovered painting.

The work depicts Jules Guillemets and his wife and business partner, Jeanne-Julie. They owned a clothing boutique and definitely dressed the part. Monet was friends with the Guillemets and once said of Jeanne-Julie that her "stockinged legs" and "fashionable shoes" gave him "thoughts of sweet nonsense."
